The Indian National Young Academy of Science (INYAS) came into existence in December 2014, as an initiative of the Indian National Science Academy (INSA), New Delhi. The first 20 members of INYAS were chosen from recipients of the INSA Young Scientist Medal. INYAS aims to encourage the free exchange of ideas among young scientists. The past 15 years have seen a worldwide trend towards national academies that connect early-career scientists with each other, beginning with the Die Junge Akademie in 2000.
