INYAS National Competition for Research Excellence 2024

Indian National Young Academy of Science (INYAS) is pleased to announce its National Competition for Research Excellence 2024 in 5 research areas listed below:  

  1. Natural Nanofibers with Societal Impact (sponsored by Cellulose Lab, MSME, IIT Hyderabad)
  2. Carbon Materials (sponsored by Carbon Laboratory Chemical Engineering, IIT Hyderabad)
  3. Electrochemistry (sponsored by Metrohm India Pvt. Ltd.)
  4. Sir John Mason best Thesis for Interdisciplinary Research (sponsored by Mr Sivaraman, Karaikudi)
  5. Leland Clark best thesis in Biosensors (Sponsored by Dr. Subbiah Alwarappan, CSIR-CECRI, Karaikudi, Tamilnadu)

 General Eligibility Criterion:

  1. Ph.D. students who have worked in the above-mentioned research categories and graduated or submitted or defended their thesis by December 31, 2023, from any institute, university, or R&D lab in India are eligible to apply.
  2. They must have published at least two papers in peer-reviewed national or international journals (Scopus/Web of Science indexed) as first author.

 General guidelines:

  1. Applicants can apply for a maximum of 2 categories. These should be submitted separately.
  2. Those who have applied in previous rounds are not eligible.
  3. Candidates can make only one submission for each category. In case more than one application is received from an applicant for a particular category, the submission shall be disqualified.
  4. To apply, the candidates should first select the category from the dropdown menu below. This will direct them to the specific submission form.
  5. Candidates will receive a confirmation email of submission.
  6. You must keep the documents ready as per the requirements given below. You will also be required to submit proof of eligibility (thesis submission certificate/degree certificate as .jpg).
  7. A reference /consent letter from the Guide will be required if you are shortlisted for the final round.
  1. The domain of each category is different and thus the candidates are advised to go through the description carefully.

Brief Description About Each Category:

A) Best Research in Natural Nanofibers with Societal Impact

Sponsored by Mudrika Khandelwal, Associate Professor, Cellulose and Composites Group, IIT Hyderabad. 

Research area: Natural nanofibres bear a huge potential to provide sustainable solutions for various societal problems in health and the environment. This award is to acknowledge the research contribution in applied research where natural nanofibers (fibres below 100 nm originating from natural sources) or their modified forms are utilised in the area of healthcare and environmental remediation.

The winner will receive INR 10,000/- and a certificate.

B) Best PhD Thesis in the area of Carbon Materials

Sponsored by Chandra Shekhar Sharma, Professor, Carbon Lab, IIT Hyderabad. 

Research Area:  Carbon is nature’s building block and one of the most versatile engineering materials. Carbon materials have received tremendous attention in a variety of applications including energy, environment and healthcare. This award is instituted to appreciate the best doctoral research in the area of carbon materials.

C) Best PhD Thesis in the area of Electrochemistry

Sponsored by Metrohm India Pvt. Ltd

Research Area: Metrohm offers a wide range of services and support for carrying out state-of-the-art research in the vast field of electrochemistry. This award is instituted to honor the best PhD Thesis in the broad area of electrochemistry including advancing the fundamental understanding as well as developing new technological solutions at the forefront of electrochemical research. Some of the applications of electrochemistry include but are not limited to areas like energy storage & conversion, corrosion, coatings, electrolysis and sensors.

D) Sir John Mason Outstanding Thesis for Interdisciplinary Research

Sponsored by Mr Sivaraman, Karaikudi. 

Research Area: Fundamental research carried out in the interdisciplinary fields of Atmospheric Sciences, Astrochemistry and Planetary Sciences. (To promote interdisciplinary research, preference will be given to candidates who have completed Bachelor and Master’s degrees in different areas).

The winner will receive INR 10,000/-, a certificate and a plaque

 

E) Prof. Leland Clark Best thesis in biosensors

(Sponsored by Dr A Subbiah, Karaikudi)

Research Area: Biosensors – To promote biosensors research among College/University students to unlock the enigma in disease diagnosis, water quality assessment, food safety and environment. This category especially will consider research done in the domain of Electroanalysis, Electrochemical Sensor, Biosensors, etc., research area only.

Award Details: Rs. 10,000/-

Number of Awards: One

 

Form of submission: An abstract with a maximum of 500 words description of the work and soft copies of their publications. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to make a 15-minute presentation before the selection committee in the second and final round
