INYAS National Awards for Research Excellence 2022
For the year 2022, the INYAS research excellence awards are announced in 5 areas. The requirements for each award vary and thus the candidates are advised to go through the requirements carefully
Last date has been closed on 7th January, 2022
- Applicants can apply for a maximum of 2 awards. These should be submitted separately.
- Those who have applied in previous rounds are not eligible.
- For most awards, only those who have received their PhD degree or submitted or anticipate to submit their thesis in 2021 (1st Jan 2021 to 07th Jan 2022) are eligible to apply. Proofs will have to be uploaded. This might vary with awards. Please check eligibility for each award carefully.
- Candidates can make only one submission for each award. In case more than one application is received from an applicant for a particular award, the submission shall be disqualified.
- In order to apply, the candidates should first select the award from dropdown menu below. This will direct them to the specific submission form of the award.
- Candidates will receive a confirmation email of submission.
- You must keep the documents ready as per the requirements given below. You will also be required to submit a proof of eligibility (thesis submission certificate/degree certificate as .jpg). In case you are anticipating to submit within the time frame, a letter from guide shall suffice at this stage. Later the certificate will have to be produced when asked.
- A reference /consent letter from Guide will be required if you are shortlisted for final round.
Deadline for submission of all awards has been extended till 07 th January 2022.

A) Best Research in Natural Nanofibers with Societal Impact
Sponsored by Mudrika Khandelwal, Associate Professor, Cellulose and composites Group, IIT Hyderabad. Research area: Natural nanofibrous bear a huge potential in providing sustainable solutions for various societal problems in health and environment. This award is to acknowledge the research contribution in applied research where natural nanofibers (fibres below 100 nm originating from natural sources) or their modified forms are utilised in the area of healthcare and environmental remediation.
Eligibility:
- Ph.D. students from any discipline, graduated or submitted thesis in the year 2021 from any institute, university or R&D lab are eligible to apply.
- They must have published at least one paper in a peer reviewed international journal as first author.
Form of submission: A graphical abstract with a 500 words description of the work which can be easily understood by non-scientific community. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to make a 10 min presentation before the selection committee in the second and final round. The write-up should quantify the impact of research on society and environment. Award: INR 10,000 cash prize + certificate.

B) Best PhD Thesis in the area of Carbon Materials
Sponsored by Chandra Shekhar Sharma, Associate Professor, Carbon Lab, IIT Hyderabad. Research Area: Carbon is nature’s building block and one of the most versatile engineering materials. Carbon materials have received tremendous attention in a variety of applications including energy, environment and healthcare. This award is instituted to appreciate the best doctoral research in the area of carbon materials. Eligibility:
- Ph.D. students from any area of Basic Sciences or Applied Engineering who worked in the broad area of carbon materials and are graduated in the year 2021 from any institute, university or R&D lab. PhD students who submitted their thesis before the last date of submission are also eligible to apply.
- They must have published at least two paper in a peer reviewed international journal (Scopus/Web of Science indexed) as first author.
Form of submission: Applicants need to submit their PhD thesis synopsis (approved by their supervisor) along with the soft copies of their publications. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to make a 15 min presentation before the selection committee in the second and final round. Award: INR 10,000 cash prize, citation and an award plaque.

C) Excellence in Nano Innovation Award
Sponsored by E-Spin Nanotech Pvt Ltd Research Area: The award will be given for ground breaking invention in the field of nanotechnology especially in Chemical engineering, Material Sciences and Biological Sciences. The invention should have a large social impact . Eligibility: Ph.D. students from any area of Basic Sciences or Applied Engineering who are graduated in the year 2021 from any institute, university or R&D lab. PhD students who submitted their thesis before the last date of submission are also eligible to apply. Form of submission: Presentation (up-to 15 slides) and synopsis (1 page). The presentation should include a business model. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to make a 15 min presentation before the selection committee in the second and final round. Award: INR 25,000 + Certificate A potential idea may be financially supported by E-Spin Nanotech.

D) Best PhD Thesis in the area of Electrochemistry
Sponsored by Metrohm India Pvt. Ltd. Research Area: Metrohm offers a wide range of services and support for carrying out the state of the art research in the vast field of electrochemistry. This award is instituted to honor the best PhD Thesis the broad area of electrochemistry including advancing the fundamental understanding as well as developing new technological solutions at the forefront of electrochemical research. Some of the applications of electrochemistry include but not limited to areas like energy storage & conversion, corrosion, coatings, electrolysis and sensors. Eligibility:
- Ph.D. students from any area of Basic Sciences or Applied Engineering who worked in the broad area of electrochemistry and are graduated in the year 2021 from any institute, university or R&D lab. E) Sir John Mason Thesis Award for Interdisciplinary Research
Sponsored by Mr Sivaraman, Karaikudi. Research Area: Fundamental research carried out in the interdisciplinary fields of Atmospheric Sciences, Astrochemistry and Planetary Sciences. Eligibility:
- Ph.D. students from interdisciplinary fields of Atmospheric Sciences, Astrochemistry and Planetary Sciences graduated or submitted thesis in the year 2021 from any University (and affiliated colleges) and autonomous colleges are eligible to apply. In the case of woman candidates, if they have graduated (with Viva) in the year 2020 are also eligible to apply.
- They must have published at least one paper in a peer-reviewed international journal as the first author.
(To promote interdisciplinary research, preference will be given to candidates who had completed Bachelor and Master degree in different areas).
Form of submission: A graphical abstract with 100 words describing the work which can be easily understood by non-scientific community is required. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to make a 15 min presentation before the selection committee in the second and final round. Award: INR 10,000 cash prize, citation and an award plaque
